In Internet Explorer
In the menu, under Tools >> Internet Options >> Advanced >> Java(sun), ensure the "Use JRE x.x for < applet > (requires restart)" is checked.

In Mozilla Firefox
In the menu, under Tools >> Options >> Content >> ensure the "Enable Java" is checked.
