The Pain
Assessment Battery (PAB) is a brief yet comprehensive assessment
tool for evaluating and documenting the behavioral and
psychological ramifications of living with pain. The PAB was
developed by Bruce N. Eimer, Ph.D. (author of Pain
ManagementPsychotherapy: A Practical Guide, 1998, John Wiley &
Sons) and Lyle Allen III, M.A., of CogniSyst, Inc (also coauthor
of three symptom validity tests). The PAB has considerable face
validity and a high degree of clinical utility, but is also easy
to administer and interpret.
The PAB is now
internet accessibleincreasing its convenience and functionality
for both clinicians and patients. The current version of the PAB
represents the next step in the evolution of the PAB. Using
internet delivery, the current version of the PAB includes the
Pain Coping Inventory, Stress Symptoms Checklist, Pain Experience
Scale, and the Coping Styles Profile.
The PAB is
comprised of:
 |
Pain
Coping Inventory (PCI)
(Can also be ordered as separate instrument independent of
PAB) |
 |
Stress
Symptoms Checklist (SSCL)
(Can also be ordered as separate instrument independent of
PAB) |
 |
Pain
Experience Scale (PES)
The PES identifies primary pain source areas, quantifies
pain frequency and severity, and elicits qualitative pain
descriptors. Patients utilize both a 0-10 rating scale and
adjective choices to describe their pain. |
 |
Coping
Style Profile (CSP)
The CSP is a brief, 9-item questionnaire that assesses a
persons preferred modality for coping with problems
such as chronic pain. The CSP is an extension of Arnold
Lazarus BASIC ID model and is useful in both assessing
chronic pain and individualizing treatment approaches. |
