The Adolescent Symptom Inventory-4
(ASI-4) is a behavior rating scale that screens for a variety of adolescent psychiatric disorders
and is based on the criteria specified in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-IV (1994;
American Psychiatric Association). The ASI-4 is appropriate for use with
male and female adolescents aged 12-18.
ASI-4 scores show a high degree of
correspondence with psychiatric diagnosis (predictive validity) and correlate
well with other commonly used dimensional scales of psychopathology (concurrent validity). As a
result, the ASI-4 is useful as a screening instrument in mental health settings,
schools, and healthcare facilities.
Three versions of the ASI-4 are
available. The ASI-4 Parent Checklist contains 120 items that screen for 18
emotional and behavioral disorders. The ASI-4 Teacher Checklist contains 79
items that screen for 15 emotional and behavioral disorders. Each of these
instruments is designed to be completed in less than 20 minutes. The Youth's Inventory-4 (YI-4) is a self-report instrument
completed by the adolescent that corresponds item-by-item to the ASI-4 Parent Checklist.
